Advancing the Science
of Emotion Processing.

The Eilert Institute for Emotion Science investigates how people perceive and understand their own and others’ emotions, regulate emotional states, and express emotions.

Our research examines how the coordination of these four core functions shapes mental health, adaptive functioning, and human flourishing.

About the Institute

Understanding Emotion Processing as a Coordinated System

The Eilert Institute for Emotion Science is an independent research institute based in Berlin, Germany.

Our work is grounded in the Core Functions of Emotion Processing (C-FEP): impathy, empathy, emotion regulation, and emotion expression. We investigate how these functions develop, how they are coordinated across individuals and situations, and how this coordination relates to attachment representations, psychopathology, and contextual demands.

Through theory-driven, multimethod, and intervention-oriented research, we seek to deepen the scientific understanding of emotion processing and translate this knowledge into benefits for mental health, adaptive functioning, relationships, resilience, and human flourishing.

Theory-Driven Research

Developing integrative models that connect foundational theory with testable scientific questions.

International Collaboration

Bringing together complementary perspectives, disciplines, and methodological expertise.

Open Science

Promoting transparency, reproducibility, and the responsible sharing of research findings.

Societal Impact

Translating scientific knowledge into meaningful benefits for individuals, relationships, and society.

OUR SCIENTIFIC FRAMEWORK

The Core Functions of Emotion Processing (C-FEP)

C-FEP conceptualizes emotion processing as the dynamic coordination of four interdependent core functions.

The Core Functions of Emotion

Rather than examining these functions in isolation, we investigate how they interact within individuals, relationships, and changing environments.
This integrative framework guides our research on attachment, psychopathology, emotional flexibility, intervention science, and aesthetic medicine.
